Finding the right toys for 5 year olds is not that difficult. Finding great 5-year-old-toys or birthday gifts for a 5-year-old aint so easy. Is it a toy for a 5 year old boy? Or a gift for a 5 year old girl? As toys for a five year old are very different than toys for a 4 year old. And these ever changing five year olds are getting quite quick. For all other ages at ebeanstalk, we match the toys to the 3 month developmental milestones. For 5 year olds, we match the toys ‘to the year’. We do this because development gets less predictable down to the 3 month increment. As you look through ebeanstalk’s selection of great toys for five year olds, here are some things to keep in mind (if you want more detail on what toys and gifts are appropriate for 5 year olds, please check out our developmental milestones for 5 year olds).
Toys & gifts for five year olds: OK, get ready. The 5’s are WAY different than the 4’s. before we talk about toys, here are some fun facts about five year olds. They can way between 31 and 57 pounds and are typically between 39-48 inches tall. Also, their eating around 1,700 calories a day. That means these 5 year olds are super active. Get ready to feed ‘em and try to keep up with them.
Their ability to throw is dramatically better. Catching as well. They are climbing with a great deal of confidence (see outdoor toys).
Five year olds enjoy collecting things. They also need to ‘get away’ and be alone. Make sure to have toys and games that the kids can play by themselves.
Their attention span is much improved – they can concentrate for longer periods of time – and the toys reflect this. Puzzles are MUCH more complicated. The ability for 5 year olds to build things is markedly better. The games they play are more advanced and you as a parent or grandparent will enjoy playing along with them. Their dexterity is surprisingly good – with fine motor skills – for art, putting pieces together and small pieces for doll houses.
And, you can really start to teach a 5 year old how to tell time. Of course with a digital clock, but we always opt for the old fashioned clocks.
What a breeze these 5 year olds are. The toys are getting as mature as the child, and it’s amazing that many of the toys and games are a challenge for you as well.
Life is more about toys for a 5 year old. We know that many children this age are on the computer and playing with handheld games and even ipods. Our speech pathologist, Shari Harpaz, wrote a great article on technology, and it’s effects on language delays.

Our team of child specialists brings a comprehensive approach to child development. Using their collective experiences - Shari, Andy, Deanie, Jenn, Barbara, and Gopi - ensure each and every facet of child development is covered. Specifically, they looked at over 10,000 toys, selected the best learning toys and matched each to a stage of development. They also create graduated play ideas for each toy, author the eBeanstalk instruction cards, answer great FAQs, and much, much more.
